The elevator door dinged and opened.
The nurse smiled. "Here we are!' she said cheerfully, expertly backing Mom out and turning her around. I still felt slightly sick to my stomach as I trailed behind the nurse, Mom, Mrs. Stephenson, and Caleb.
We stopped when we reached room 117.
The nurse opened up the door and held it open, waiting for us to follow. She pushed aside a blue and white privacy curtain and we walked in. It was a small room, with bare, white walls, a mechanical bed, a tan couch, and a small desk with a tray. The bathroom stood in the back, to the right, and a small wheel-y thingamajigger with drawers stood under the TV. In the wheel-y thingy was a small, unisex white hat with blue and and light pink stripes.
I smiled softly, remembering what that was. It was where the put the newborn babies right after they were born. I walked over to the thing-y and gently picked up the hat, rubbing the soft material. "Look, Mom," I said. "Violet's hat."
The nurse smiled. "Aw, is that her name? I love it!"
Mom smiled. "Thanks," she said, then turned towards the bed. She gently rose up, out of the wheelchair and sat down on it. She picked up a small bag. "Aw, a 'Momma Bundle', she said, reading the label. In the bag was chapstick, a pair of cheerful, fuzzy, yellow socks, and other items.
The nurse took the wheel chair. "Another nurse will come and see to you in a minute. But for now, please change into this gown for us." The nurse held up a pale blue hospital gown.
Mom took it from her. "Thank you."
"No problem," the nurse replied, then walked out of the room, pulling the privacy curtain around the door as she went.
Mom walked towards the bathroom and opened the door. "I'll be out in a sec," she said, and walked into the bathroom, closing the door behind her.
She came out a few minutes later, with the gown on her body and the fuzzy yellow socks on her feet.
"Those are seriously adorable," I grinned, looking at her feet.
"Well, they cover up the varicose veins on my ankles, so they work for me," Mom grinned back, and sat on the bed.
A plump, short brunette nurse walked in, wheeling a strange-looking machine with a screen in with her. She looked at mom and grinned, showing a bright, cheerful smile.
"Hello, ma'am," she said. "so you're not exactly sure if your water broke or not?"
Mom settled herself back into the bed and folded her hands in her lap. "Well, my family and I came back from church, and, as I got up from my seat in our car, I felt a gush of water flow down my legs.
"I went to the bathroom to check my panties, and they were wet. I changed my underwear, and in a couple of minutes, checked that pair. It was wet too."
The nurse nodded. "So from there you assumed your water was broken?" she asked, tilting her head to the side.
Mom nodded, too. "Well, yes. What else could it have been?"
The nurse shrugged. "It could've been a number of things, actually. You might've just been leaking fluid, or you could've just peed your pants." she laughed. "But just to make sure, I'll give you an Ultra-sound. Lay back, please."
As mom laid back, I thought over the 'you might've just peed your pants' suggestion. Mom said she checked her second pair of underwear. I was dubious that she peed twice.
The nurse pushed the ultra-sound machine beside the bed, pushing the tray away. I sat down in the rocking chair. The nurse rubbed some gel on Mom's baby bump and slowly moved a sensor over her belly.
I smiled softly when I saw baby Vi's black-and-white figure squished up on the screen. Her heartbeat was steady---
BA-dump. BA-dump. BA-dump.
The nurse frowned. "Hm."
"What?" Mom asked hastily, her delicate brows knitting together in concern.
"Oh, it's nothing bad," the nurse replied, staring at the screen, her eyes squinted in thought. "I just . . . it's so weird! I see some fluid here--and here-- but none everywhere else! It's like some of your water broke, but some remained! I don't know what to do," she confessed.
As Mom and the nurse talked back and forth, I took a rock in the the rocking chair. I winced when the rocking chair
SCRRREEECCHHEED
loudly. Startled, and a bit sheepish at making such a loud noise, I looked over at Mrs. Stephenson.
She couldn't help laughing slightly.
I tried again.
SCRRREEECH
Whoops. Bad move.
I turned back to the nurse and Mom. "So how did you arrive here, if your husband wasn't at home?"
"Oh, my dear friend Julie brought me here," Mom smiled in Julie's direction. "She was my backup plan."
"Oh, I feel so loved," Julie joked in a whisper. I giggled. Julie's smile broadened, her face merry.
"Well," the nurse was saying, "I'm going to need to send in the resident doctor to see if your water is really broken or not."
"Ok," Mom said.
"I'll be back later to check you," she smiled. "Good bye."
"Bye," Mom smiled back, wearily.
**************
A knock sounded on the door. "Hello?" a higher-pitched, slightly accented male-voice asked. A head popped out of the door. I assumed it was the doctor, here to see Mom. "Amanda?"
"Yes," Mom confirmed.
The doctor smiled and walked in, closing the door behind him. He was a shorter man, with cinnamon colored skin, and jet-black hair with a beard that ended at his chin. He wore a white robe with a purple T-shirt, and what looked like funky yoga pants on his legs. In his hands he held a clipboard.
"I am here to see if your water broke or not," he said.
"Yes," Mom said again, and gestured to us. "Are they allowed to stay while you . . . uh, check me?"
Yuck. Check. Ok, I didn't know if I wanted to stay while the doctor 'checked' my mom in a way that didn't sound exactly pleasant. But I kinda wanted to stay too, just to make sure my mom had support.
Mrs. Stephenson spoke up. "Amanda, I can go with them to the gift shop or something while he looks at you,"she offered.
Mom looked at me. "would you be okay with that?" she asked.
I shrugged. "um, sure."
"Why can't we stay?" Caleb wondered. Yeah, he hadn't been given The Talk/The Birds and The Bees Conversation yet. Lucky him.
Mom looked at him sympathetically. "It's private, honey."
"I can check you now, if you'd like," the doctor said.
Mrs. Stephenson rose. "Let's go, Caleb," she said gently. I slowly got to my feet as well, casting a quick glance at Mom. "Yes, you too, Em, I'm sorry," she said.
I shrugged. "I'm fine, mom," I assured her, giving her a little wave as we walked out of the room.
